Newer neighborhoods and new pours
On a lot that was finished in the last few years, the ground around the house is usually backfill that has not settled evenly yet. That matters more than people expect. Pouring a driveway or patio over loose fill without compacting it properly is how a two year old slab ends up with a step at a joint. We excavate to the depth the soil calls for, bring in base rock and compact it in lifts, and check the grade before forms go up. Builder grade landscaping also tends to drain toward the house, so we correct slope while we are in there rather than sealing the problem in under concrete.
